Experiments with Tape Speed

Here are three different versions of the song ‘Nico’.. the song began as a simple lullaby to my nephew, but morphed into something more complex. I suppose it’s appropriate because babies can go from joy to fear to confusion to joy again so quickly, and this song does that as well. Virtually all of the vocals on this song were done at different speeds, and in the pre-chorus I actually just sang one note and warped the tape speed downwards to create the effect of the vocal raising in pitch. Took lots and lots of trial and error how to figure out how to do that, but I think it creates a really unique sound. Can’t wait until little Nico is old enough for me to explain all of this to him.

I am back from Asia–it was wonderful and alien and surreal. Many things are cooking, tour plans, visuals, words, side chains and fruitful distractions. Excited.
